Dust mites are microscopic bugs that can cause a lot of discomfort in the form of allergic/asthmatic reactions for people who are sensitive or overexposed to them. Dust mites like a moister environment and like their name suggests, they like dust. Beds are a prime habitat (where we spend a third of our life). A typical used mattress may have anywhere from 100,000 to 10 million mites inside. 

Depending on the person and the level of exposure, reactions can range from itchy eyes to asthma attacks. Estimates are that dust mites may be a factor in 50 to 80 percent of asthmatics, as well as in countless cases of eczema, hay fever and other allergic ailments. Learn more about dust mites.

The use of barrier covers on your futons, mattresses and pillows can prevent dust mites from entering them and laying eggs in your bedding thereby reducing exposure. Natural wool and natural rubber seem to also act to deter dust mites (which are about 100 microns) naturally. It is also recommended that you replace feather or down pillows and mattresses as part of eliminating dust mite exposure.
